Summer is the hard season for a Norway crawl space. Thunderstorms deliver a lot of water very quickly, and the humidity that follows keeps the space under the floor damp long after the ground above has dried.
That mix is why we look outside as well as under the house in Norway: grading, downspouts and where the roof water lands often explain more than anything visible in the crawl space itself.
We mark the points we take moisture readings from and record them, so there is evidence the structure actually reached target rather than an assurance that it probably did.
Signs worth acting on
You do not need all of these. One is enough.
- A damp, earthy smell that is strongest in the lowest rooms
- A patch of floor that gives slightly when you walk over it
- Gaps opening at baseboards, or a door that no longer latches
- Condensation on ductwork or pipes under the floor
- Batts of insulation fallen away from the subfloor
- A silt line or watermark on the foundation piers
Water near Norway
Named water close to Norway. Low ground near a creek or river is where storm runoff collects, and where crawl spaces take it first.
- the Little River (stream)
- Twin Lakes (reservoir)

Norway crawl space questions
Why does my Norway crawl space only flood after heavy rain?
That points to surface water rather than groundwater. Storms around Orangeburg County deliver a lot of water quickly, and when the ground cannot take it fast enough it travels across the surface and in through the foundation vents.
Can grading and gutters fix it without a pump?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking first because exterior water is cheapest to deal with. Around Norway, roof water and a slope feeding the foundation explain a lot of the calls we take.
Why is it dry in winter and wet by late summer?
Humidity rather than a failure. An enclosed space under a Norway floor tracks the outside air, and by August that air has been wet for months.
Can I stay in the house while the work is done?
In almost all cases, yes. The work happens under the floor, and access is usually through an exterior hatch. We will tell you up front if anything about your Norway property changes that.
Will my Norway crawl space dry out if I open the vents?
Usually not. For much of the year the air around Norway is warmer and wetter than the crawl space, so opening it up deposits moisture on the cool joists instead of carrying it away.
